Filters in Platform Analytics
Summarize
Summary of Filters in Platform Analytics
Filters in Platform Analytics enable you to refine data displayed on inline and technical dashboards by various criteria such as data values, text, Boolean states, or dates. They help tailor visualizations and lists for more focused insights. Filters are managed via the Filter library, accessible through the Platform Analytics interface, requiring theanalyticsfilteradminrole or higher.

Access and Roles
Navigate to All > Platform Analytics > Library > Filters to access the Filter library. Users with the analyticsfilteradmin role can create and manage filters, including saving them to the library and copying existing filters. Other users must have dashboard edit permissions to add or modify filters on inline dashboards.
Filters on Dashboards
- Inline dashboards: Filters can be created directly on dashboards or added from the library. They can apply to a specific tab or the entire dashboard. Filters affect all target visualizations and list components.
- Technical dashboards: Built in UI Builder, technical dashboards offer greater flexibility but require expertise, including creating custom event handlers for filters to work with lists and visualizations. Filters here do not retain values across user sessions or page refreshes.
- Filter groups: Multiple filters can be configured into groups to apply or clear collectively, improving efficiency by reducing database calls.
Filter Behavior and Configuration
- Filter types must be selected when creating filters, with subsequent configuration options depending on the chosen type.
- Editing filter configurations resets filter values to defaults for all users upon their next login or page refresh.
- Usage Insights filters act as global filters, impacting all visualizations on the dashboard.
- The default maximum number of custom filters for Usage Insights is 500, configurable via system properties.
Exporting Dashboards and Filter Values
- When exporting dashboards to Microsoft PowerPoint, current filter values are applied automatically.
- PDF exports allow choosing whether to retain filter values.
- Technical dashboards do not retain filter values upon export.
Domain Filters
On domain-separated instances, domain filters provide a specialized way to filter visualizations by domain. These use a different component and require separate configuration.
Additional Notes
- Core UI filters on dashboards migrated in compatibility mode are edited using Core UI tools.
- For creating filters, follow the specific configuration steps corresponding to the selected filter type for best results.
Filter lists and data visualizations on an inline or technical dashboard. Filter by possible data value or text, by whether the value is true or false, or by date.
To find Filters in Platform Analytics, navigate to . Access to the filter library requires the analytics_filter_admin role or higher. For more information on user roles in Filters, see Filter roles.
This video illustrates how to create a filter, in this case a multi-select filter for table data.
Technical dashboards are populated in the UI Builder and are more flexible but require considerably more expertise. For example, on a technical dashboard, you have to create custom event handlers for filters to apply to lists or data visualizations.
When you edit Core UI filters dashboards migrated in compatibility mode, you do so in the Core UI tools. For more information, see Reporting, dashboards, and Performance Analytics in the Core UI.
Filters on inline dashboards
For inline dashboards, you can create a filter directly on the dashboard through the inline editor, or add a filter from the filter library. In either case, you can add filters to a specific tab or have them apply to the entire dashboard. To take these actions, you only need the right to edit the dashboard.
If you have the analytics_filter_admin role, you can also create a filter for the library through the Filter Designer or copy an existing filter to the library.
The filter applies to those data visualizations and list components that contain a target of the filter.
In a filter group, you configure several filters and apply or clear them with one action, making one database call. A filter group may therefore be more efficient than multiple separate filters.
Retaining filter values
Filter values are not retained when someone edits the filter configuration. On editing, the filter reverts to its default values for all users on their next login or page refresh. On technical dashboards and pages created in UI Builder, filters don't retain values across user sessions or refreshes. For an exception, see Add a dashboard to a Dashboards page.
When you export a dashboard to Microsoft PowerPoint, filter values are applied automatically. When you export a dashboard to PDF, you can choose whether to retain filter values. Filter values are not retained when you export a technical dashboard. For more information, see Export a Platform Analytics dashboard.
Domain filters
You can filter visualizations by domain on domain-separated instances. Domain filtering uses a different component. For more information, see Create a domain filter.
