# Event Management setup

# Event Management

After activating Event Management, set it up to receive and process events, and generate
and analyze alerts.

## Event Management setup without using guided setup {#c_EMConfiguration__section_cm1_ypm_22b}

Set up Event Management by completing these tasks in the following order:

1. Configure a [MID Server](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/access?context=r_MIDServerSystemRequirements&version=yokohama&pubname=yokohama-servicenow-platform&ft:locale=en-US) to receive and process events via the MID Server.
2. [Configure the MID Web Server extension](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/_6TI0U~gdVg0W_7HIWP7AA "The MID Web Server is a MID Server extension that enables developing REST APIs to send events and metrics to the MID Server. The extension is leveraged by other MID Server extensions, such as Metric Intelligence, MID WebService Event Listener, and the Agent Client Collector websocket endpoint extension.").
3. Configure [Configure Event Management connectors](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/YfOJAQ2uERKFu1vhPy0gBg "Event Management provides many connectors to pull or push events from external devices. Connectors are available from the ServiceNow store as well as from third parties. You can also create custom connectors.").
4. Configure [event field mappings](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/CqLxSVNMUQ7IxuWraPtG3A "Use Event field mappings rules to map values from specific fields to values in other fields.") and [Binding alerts to CIs](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/yhAevCrJwBxWNoZGxoo2EQ "CI binding or linking is the process of finding and connecting a Configuration Item (CI) from the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to an alert, using the logic defined in event rules. This helps ensure alerts are tied to the right IT components for better visibility and faster issue resolution.") to manage alert generation.
5. [Alert management rules for resolving alerts](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/xDdSX0s4P7cG55Rl4AxLww "You can configure Event Management to respond to alerts automatically. An alert management rule determines the required alert response, such as to open an incident, knowledge base article, open a task, launch remediation action."), perform, and [CI remediation](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/c9BmuRiyURYmQ~y1mqFbnA "Create a CI remediation rule that lets users manually apply an Orchestration workflow for resolving issues with specific CIs associated with alerts. Define these CIs in the CI filter conditions of the rule.") for alert management.
6. [Request Service
   Mapping](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/4wdymt6ZnC2Ns0MgK6ME2A "Service Mapping is available under the ITOM Visibility subscription and requires activation by ServiceNow personnel.") and get a top-down [discovery](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/Sa51WHQfJAmFMZCPRWGLyw "A top-down discovery provides a list of CIs and their interrelationships. This information is useful for managing software services and hardware issues that are associated with alerts.") to receive CI relationships for software and hardware.
7. Configure [impact calculation](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/XZ156OxHta9TMEfPIYoGIg "Impact calculation shows the magnitude of an outage on CIs, services, alerts, and alert groups. The system uses factors such as impact rules and CI relationships to calculate the severity of a generated alert. The severity appears on the impact tree, application services maps, and dashboards.") for services, to establish priority for alert resolution.
8. Configure [alert
   groups](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/PjtOeeTH0oari3U9nk3Y~g "An alert query is a set of alerts that meet specific criteria for a particular service.") to consolidate related alerts.
9. Configure the Predictive Intelligence plugin (com.glide.platform_ml) to enable machine learning and finding similar alerts.
10. Configure any other general tasks that appear in this section as appropriate.

Event Management does not support creating incidents on remote instances.

## Event Management setup using guided setup {#c_EMConfiguration__section_lfb_2qm_22b}

Event Management guided setup provides a sequence of tasks that help you
configure Event Management on your ServiceNow instance. To open Event Management guided setup, navigate to Guided SetupITOM Guided Setup.
