Get started with Cloud Discovery by configuring credentials, service accounts, schedules, and MID Servers.
Setting up Cloud Discovery is the first stage in performing cloud discovery and using Cloud Provisioning and Governance for managing discovered cloud resources.

Cloud Discovery is part of the ServiceNow AI Platform and deploys some of its platform-wide mechanisms and features. At the same time, there are some configurations that are specific to Cloud Discovery only.

## Verify the REST API Permissions {#cloud-discovery-setup__id_d4f_3cb_f1c}

Download the [Cloud Discovery patterns spreadsheet](https://downloads.docs.servicenow.com/resource/enus/api/servicenow-discovery-patterns-api-details.xlsx) so you can grant user permissions required for running the Discovery patterns. In addition to permissions, the spreadsheet also includes useful information such as pattern names, types, CI Classes, and links to vendor documentation. New patterns are available
quarterly, so check periodically to be sure you have the latest version of the spreadsheet.{#cloud-discovery-setup__cloud-discovery-api-paragraph}
Perform the following tasks in the exact order they are listed below:

1. Evaluate your cloud deployment and plan how you are going to discover it.
2. [Request Discovery](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/rjEX4aFPMlu3_v~l0H1LGg "Request and activate the Discovery (com.snc.discovery) plugin to enable Discovery capabilities on your instance.").
3. [Install and configure the MID Servers](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/J5R6fEzDsXUAwkST18d7jg "Install and configure the MID Servers correctly to enable ITOM products to access to the cloud resources.").
4. Set up service accounts and configure access to them.
   * [Set up AWS service accounts](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/UO4WIwvrPVWckI9LeWzMRg "Create and configure cloud service accounts at ServiceNow AI Platform for the corresponding Amazon Web Services (AWS) service accounts.")
   * [Create Azure service accounts](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/OZXNSryGjVt9Xw~aObzRqw "During Cloud Provisioning Day 1 setup, you added one service account to the cloud account. To compartmentalize your infrastructure or to include different datacenters, you can add another service account. A particular datacenter, however, cannot be selected in more than one service account in a cloud account.")
   * [Create GCP service accounts](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/e9DGid_zYnAuYByOctP01w "A service account is a secure record on your instance that stores the credential and access information for your provider account. Discovery uses the information to access your provider account to get data on each resource in each specified datacenter. A cloud account is the logical representation in Cloud Provisioning and Governance of all or part of your managed cloud infrastructure. A cloud account can include multiple service accounts — even service accounts from different providers. For each service account, you specify which datacenters to include in the cloud account.")
   * [Create VMware service accounts](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/pgRQOsEEtoJ13bMiDW48MQ "To securely access data on your provider account, the Discovery process must present appropriate credentials. To make the credentials available to Discovery, you first create an account in the VMware Console. You then securely store the credentials in a service account in your instance.")
   * [Set up Alibaba Cloud service accounts](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/8NjTdVLXmyGm6MEKEZ8~NA "Create Alibaba Cloud infrastructure service accounts on the ServiceNow AI Platform to access your Alibaba Cloud account during Alibaba Cloud discovery.")
   {#cloud-discovery-setup__ul_p2t_zm4_bpb}
5. For Amazon AWS Cloud and Microsoft Azure Cloud, configure notifications and alerts from the Amazon AWS Cloud and Microsoft Azure Cloud to make the necessary updates to your CMDB without additional scanning.
   * [Configure AWS Config event notifications](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/VvALSUxnGShmIWNqsCcyOQ "Configure the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Config service to send event notifications to the ServiceNow instance for any changes in the lifecycle state of a resource.")
   * [Configure the Microsoft Azure Alert service to auto-update the CMDB](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/lHXJClXQGbinwpoNOhYIqw#azure-alert-service-cloud-mgt "Configure the Microsoft Azure Alert service to auto-update the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) without waiting for the next scheduled Cloud Discovery to run.")
   * [Configure the Google Cloud Logging service to auto-update the CMDB](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/MaVDYaoPNWQMPtPGWD6m2g "You can activate the Google Cloud Logging (formerly Stackdriver Logging) service to auto-update Configuration Management Database (CMDB) configuration items (CI) data whenever Google Cloud Connector or your Google account makes a life-cycle state or configuration change to a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) resource. As a result, the CI data in the CMDB is updated without having to wait for Discovery to run.")
   * [Configure the VMware Events service to auto-update the CMDB](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/SYeBsv1S5bO2uh3DIdsLfA "Configure events from the cloud environment to make the necessary updates to your CMDB without additional scanning. The VMware Events service can auto-update CI data in the CMDB whenever Cloud Provisioning and Governance makes a life-cycle state or configuration change to a VMware resource. As a result, the CI data in the CMDB is updated without having to wait for Discovery to run.")

   {#cloud-discovery-setup__ul_ovd_3ly_qmb}
   Note:
   Event-driven discovery does not require Cloud Provisioning and Governance.
6. Ensure that your ServiceNow instance has the relevant patterns and CI classes (types) for cloud resources. You may need to deploy the latest version of the following applications from the ServiceNow Store.
   * Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns
   * CMDB CI Class Models
   {#cloud-discovery-setup__ul_ogz_4sy_vpb}
7. [Create discovery schedules for cloud resources](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/mvUB4lhtHGGrh93mggIcpw#discovery-manager "Create schedules for discovering cloud resources based on the cloud discovery method you choose; that is, service accounts or IP ranges.").
