Amazon EventBridge Event Bus pattern-based discovery
Summarize
Summary of Amazon EventBridge Event Bus pattern-based discovery
This feature in ServiceNow’s Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application enables automated detection and mapping of Amazon EventBridge Event Buses within your AWS cloud environment. It helps customers maintain an accurate and up-to-date CMDB by discovering EventBridge Event Buses and their associated configurations and relationships.

Key Features
- Pattern-based discovery: Uses the Amazon AWS - EventBridge Event Bus - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern to identify EventBridge Event Buses.
- Data population: Discovers and stores EventBridge Event Bus information both in CMDB tables (Cloud Messaging Service) and non-CMDB AWS-specific tables.
- Configurable activation: The EventBridge pattern is disabled by default but can be enabled without losing update support during application upgrades.
- Governance compliance: Supports AWS GovCloud discovery by allowing configuration of datacenter URLs in AWS service accounts.
- Tag collection: Captures AWS tags related to EventBridge Event Buses and stores them in a key-value format linked to the CMDB records.
- CI relationships and references: Automatically creates relationships between EventBridge Event Buses and AWS Datacenters for comprehensive service mapping.
- Avoids duplicate discovery: Requires removal of resources from the Resource Inclusion List to prevent duplicate entries during discovery.
Practical Steps for Customers
- Verify AWS discovery prerequisites as outlined in Amazon AWS Cloud components discovery documentation.
- Ensure the EventBridge pattern is enabled in the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application.
- Remove EventBridge Event Bus resources from the Resource Inclusion List if present to avoid duplicate discovery.
- Configure discovery schedules and AWS service accounts appropriately, especially when working with AWS GovCloud.
- Review discovered EventBridge Event Bus data in both CMDB (cmdbcicloudmessagingservice) and non-CMDB AWS tables for comprehensive insights.
Expected Outcomes
- Automated and accurate discovery of Amazon EventBridge Event Buses in your AWS environment.
- Up-to-date configuration items (CIs) in the CMDB representing EventBridge Event Buses, their policies, and operational status.
- Visibility into related AWS datacenter hosting information via CI relationships.
- Comprehensive tag data associated with EventBridge Event Buses available for reporting and governance.
- Streamlined management of EventBridge resources with minimized risk of duplicate records due to proper resource inclusion management.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns finds Amazon EventBridge Event Buses on your cloud environment. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
Pattern-based discovery and mapping requirements
- Verify the AWS discovery prerequisites
- For more information, see the prerequisites section in Amazon AWS Cloud components discovery using patterns.
- Remove resources from the Resource Inclusion List table
- Verify that the relevant resource isn't listed in the Resource Inclusion List [sa_cloud_inventory_resource_whitelist] table to avoid duplicate discovery. For more information on removing resources from the Resource Inclusion List, see Amazon Web Services (AWS) Resource Inventory.
- Enable the relevant pattern
- The pattern for this service is disabled by default. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, activating or deactivating a pattern won't be considered a customization, and it will continue to receive updates. Patterns that were previously activated or deactivated will reset to the latest predefined version after upgrading while retaining the last active field value. For more information on enabling patterns, see Activate a disabled pattern.
- Configure the Discovery schedule to support GovCloud
- Discovering AWS GovCloud (US) accounts requires using a datacenter URL when setting up an AWS service account. For more information, see Create AWS service accounts.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in both CMDB and non-CMDB tables.
Data stored in non-CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the non-CMDB table when running the Amazon AWS - EventBridge Event Bus - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern.
You can review the non-CMDB AWS tables by navigating to . You can also search the navigation filter for the specific pattern name.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name [name] | Name of the event bus. |
| Object ID [object_id] | The Amazon Resource Name (ARN) of the event bus. |
| Policy [policy] | The resource-based policy that controls who can send events to the event bus. |
| Configuration Item [configuration_item] | References the Cloud Messaging Service [cmdb_ci_cloud_messaging_service] table. |
Data stored in CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the CMDB when running the Amazon AWS - EventBridge Event Bus - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name [name] | Name of the event bus. |
| Object ID [object_id] | The ARN of the event bus. |
| Type [type] | Type of resource. The value is set to AWS::EventBridge::EventBus. |
| Install Status [install_status] | Install status of the resource. Default value is Installed. |
| Operational status [operational_status] | Operational status of the resource. Default value is Operational. |
CI relationships
The Amazon AWS - EventBridge Event Bus - Extended Inventory (LP) pattern creates the following relationships and references to support Amazon EventBridge Event Bus discovery. References link to records in other tables and don't appear in the CI Relationship [cmdb_rel_ci] table.
| CI | Relationship | CI |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Messaging Service [cmdb_ci_cloud_messaging_service] | Hosted on::Hosts | AWS Datacenter [cmdb_ci_aws_datacenter] |
