# Publishing news articles {#ariaid-title1}

* Release version: Xanadu

* ![](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/portal-asset/ico-clock) 1 minute to read

News articles can be published via a publish plan or using Content templates to auto-generate publish plans. These auto-generated publish plans are inactive by default and must be activated for News articles to appear in the
portal.

## Before you begin

* Role required: sn_cd.content_manager
* Complete the steps to [Create a news article](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/eDbzuhtWhPpORY8I0RpMzA "Use News articles to keep employees updated on company news and announcements.")
{#ec-content-publish-news-articles__ul_bff_sw5_2yb}

## About this task

If you selected a Content template when you created the News article, the system generates the publish plans defined in the Content template.
Note:
If the Content template is edited after the system auto-generated the publish plans, those changes are not reflected in existing publish plans.

You can manually add publish plans, just like for other content types. For more information, see [Create a publish plan for your content](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/Q~O~DP17cxjKkIguzXi87w "After you create content in the Content Library, add one or more publish plans to control where the content is delivered, the audience, and the period of time it is available.").

## Procedure

1. Navigate to the News article that you want to publish.
2. Review the auto-generated publish plans and edit as necessary, such as to change the audience or publishing dates.
   The changes you make to publish plans do not impact the Content templates.
   Note:
   If you edit an auto-generated publish plan, ensure you select the Active option.
3. Click Activate generated plans.

## What to do next

If you edit a news article after publishing it and want to change the publish start date, you must generate new publish plans.
