With exposure management, safety team and industrial hygienists can manage exposures and exposure assessments so they can control any harmful effects on workers.

## What is an exposure {#hs-safety-exposures__section_py5_dbr_xdc}

An exposure refers to a situation or activity that has the potential to harm a person if they are in the vicinity. The severity of the harm depends on factors such as the duration of exposure and the level of the exposure. For
example, loud noise can be considered an exposure, and the noise level (decibels) and length of time a person is exposed to it are important factors in assessing this exposure.
There are various standard categories of exposures, for example:

* Noise
* Chemical
* Environmental
* Physical
* Mechanical
* Ergonomic

## Key features of exposure management {#hs-safety-exposures__section_sxy_mbr_xdc}

Safety exposure management provides the following capabilities:

* Define exposure types on the exposure list and associate risk assessments and records from the safety register.
* Perform exposure assessments that can create multiple exposure records (using a condition builder) for people affected across different locations.
* Assign follow-up actions so that the exposures are controlled, and workers are protected.

* **[Define an exposure type](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/IacbewU8EGT_i~0Fo77AAg)**
  Identify and define a potential workplace exposure type present in a location in your organization. Maintain a list of all exposures types across your organization.
* **[Create an exposure assessment for an exposure type](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/IrwN_6tz4uEMuiW90zStIQ)**
  For an exposure type, create an exposure assessment for a site location. You can also generate exposure assessments for multiple locations in your organization at once for an exposure type.

  Perform an exposure assessment for an exposure type for each site location in your organization.
