# Update an app or plugin

# Update an application or plugin {#ariaid-title1}

Update an application or plugin to get the latest features that are compatible with your instance version.

## Before you begin

For domain-separated instances:

* applications must be installed and updated from the global domain.
* The `sys_user` table record for the user who completes the task must also be in the global domain.

Role required: admin or sn_appclient.app_client_user

## Procedure

1. Navigate to the Updates tab of Application Manager in one of the following ways.
   * Navigate to AdminApplication Manager.
   * Navigate to AllAdminApplication Manager.

2. Select the Updates tab. If nothing is displayed in the Updates tab, try selecting Sync now to sync your instance with the latest application versions available on the ServiceNow Store. If no applications are populated in your Updates tab after the sync, the latest application versions available for your instance are already installed.
3. Find and select the application or plugin that you want to update.  
   You can search for an application or plugin by name, or use the sort and filter options available in the Application Manager.
4. From the Summary section of the details page, select Proceed to update.
5. Select a compatible application version or a compatible Now Assist Suite version from the version drop-down menu.

6. **Optional:** If you have available application customizations, use the Customized ver. drop-down menu to select which customization to use.  
   Your customizations might not be compatible with a new application version. Update the application in a non-production instance, then make any necessary changes to your customization and validate compatibility before making updates in production instances. 7. If the application or plugin has dependencies, verify that all necessary dependencies can be updated or installed.  
   If any dependencies are categorized as "Needs to be procured from store" or "Installation blocked," procure the necessary dependencies and sync the Application Manager with the ServiceNow Store before continuing. 8. Install the update now or schedule installation for a later time.

## Result

If you choose to install the update now, the application or plugin and its dependencies begin updating immediately. Scheduled updates begin at the chosen date and time.
