Set up phases in the Business Continuity Management application to map them to recovery and event tasks. Once phases are set up, BCM users tag recovery and event tasks with these phases and execute them in order.

## Before you begin

Role required: sn_bcm.admin

## About this task

For information on setting up the phases, see [Set up the phases](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/37LbSgw4Vq_takk9nqHLvA "Set up phases in the Business Continuity Management application to map them to recovery and event tasks. Once phases are set up, BCM users tag recovery and event tasks with these phases and execute them in order.").

For information and steps on mapping recovery tasks to phases, see [Mapping recovery tasks to phases](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/aLbQb7ovANbm0KXmXej~TQ "Starting with BCM, version 9.x.x, BCM administrators set up active phases for plans and events, enhancing recovery and event task management. BCM managers then map these phases to recovery and event tasks, executing them in a desired, logical sequence.") and [Add recovery tasks](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/CvSDnrh2xXv9gsIDBIz41Q "Add a recovery task as part of the planned recovery strategy. You can add one or more recovery tasks for a loss scenario and those recovery tasks are displayed in the loss scenario itself. Automate the recovery tasks in a plan for a faster recovery.").

For information on mapping event tasks to phases, see [Mapping event tasks to phases](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/0EViDVqhOx0DWIyFQx8z_w "Starting with BCM, version 9.x.x, BCM administrators set up active phases in the Core UI for improved event task management. BCM users then map these phases to event tasks and execute them in the set order, ensuring a logical execution sequence. The phases can be deactivated only; they cannot be deleted.").

## Procedure

1. Navigate to AllBusiness ContinuityGeneral AdministrationActive phases.
   Recovery involves a series of phases. By default, the BCM application provides these phases as part of seed data:
   * Preparation
   * Recovery
   * Recovery validation
   * Return to normal
   * Return to normal validation
   * Post-incident review
   {#set-up-phases__ul_pgw_lxt_wgc}
2. Select New.
   The Phase form is shown in the example.
3. On the form, fill in the fields.
   For the description of the fields, see [Phase form](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/okDxIisUKugmQ2MfHTIbyg "To configure phases as part of recovery activities, use the Phase form to set up phases for recovery and event tasks in the BCM Configurable Workspace. You can then associate these phases with recovery and event tasks, enabling you to track their progression effectively.").
   A sample configuration of the phase is shown where the name of the phase is phase10, its order is 80, and the phase is active.

   The order field is automatically populated with the next available number. For example, if the previous maximum order was 70, the new order will be 80. You can, however, manually adjust this order using inline
   editing if required, ensuring that the order remains unique across all phases.
   Note:
   If you try to assign an existing order to the new phase, an error message is displayed that the order already exists. Similarly, if you try to assign an existing name to a phase, the system prevents that by displaying an error message.

   The error messages are shown in the example.

   To prevent permanent deletion, the form does not include a delete button. Instead, you can soft-delete phases by clearing the Active flag, which removes them from active use in recovery and event tasks. This
   approach verifies that phases are not permanently lost and can be managed effectively.
4. Select Submit.
   The configured phase is shown in the list view of the Phases module. It can be tagged to the recovery and event tasks, allowing for more effective tracking and management of these tasks.
