  • You can start a Microsoft Teams chat with an external organization user and import chat after you are invited to their chat.

The following configuration must be complete for a guest user from an allowed-domain to initiate or import chat.

    • Enable chat access to a guest user
    • Configure external collaboration for a guest user
    • Add a guest user to the Microsoft Entra ID

For more information, see Enable chat access for guest users for self-configured app, Enable chat access for a guest user for pre-published app, and Guest access in Microsoft Teams.

    Note:

As a guest user, you can import chat only if you are present in the allowed-domain but you can initiate a chat. A tag with the label External appears by your name to indicate that you are a guest user and not present in the allowed-domain. For more information, see Add or invite people outside your Teams org to a chat.
