# Configuring CMDB Health {#ariaid-title1}

Data collection for CMDB Health is highly configurable to reflect data health requirements and standards in your organization. Most importantly, the CMDB Health Dashboard jobs are disabled by default and health data isn't
collected until you enable those jobs.
To report valuable and meaningful health data, review and adjust CMDB Health-related settings.  
1. Review [CMDB Health KPIs and metrics](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/RNQsx30XrnMFj5vsfp96Rw "CMDB Health calculates an aggregated score for three Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which are correctness, compliance, and completeness, each further consisting of sub-metrics.") to learn what CMDB Health can monitor, and what to configure to enable and support each metric. Deactivate any KPIs and metrics that you aren't interested in reporting, and set failure thresholds.
2. For each KPI and associated metric that you want monitored, define the necessary rules and fulfill other needed requirements. For example, you might need to:
   * [Set a CI attribute to be mandatory](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/BjejciCsM_AWnguRFctcvw "Configure a CI attribute as mandatory so it is included in the CMDB Health tests for the required metric if enabled. Required is a metric of the CMDB Health completeness KPI.")
   * [Set a CI field to be recommended](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/5Mh5PN4Q6akiXZWsHbko6g "Define a list of CI fields as recommended, noting that it is desirable that they are populated by a data source such as Discovery. You can then configure the CMDB completeness KPI to include recommended fields in its aggregated health reports.")
   * [Create a CMDB Health orphan rule](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/3vjy4QWqAtQQkjX4rYcpzw "Create an orphan rule to determine the percentage of orphan CIs in the CMDB. This sum is then aggregated into the correctness CMDB Health KPI. Orphan rules are defined per class, and only a single orphan rule can be defined per class.")
   * [Create a CMDB Health staleness rule](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/c4e4IgZBIaOKCIvupGoBwA "If the staleness metric is in effect, then staleness rules are used to determine the percentage of stale CIs in the CMDB. This sum is then aggregated into the correctness KPI.")

3. Narrow the scope of CIs that are included in health calculations - see [Create health inclusion rule](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/dF8L_QF87g3GNyPIMFjGMQ "Filter the CIs that are included in health calculations and that appear in the CMDB Health Dashboard by defining health inclusion rules. Use health inclusion rules to temporarily filter out classes that generate a large number of failures, until the problems are fixed.").

5.
