Setting up domain separation involves requesting activation of a plugin, setting
options, and assigning users and records to domains.
Do the following to set up domain separation:

1. [Request domain separation](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/qb1zon1C6n_KKQdU1g~1QA "All domain support features are activated with a plugin called Domain Support - Domain Extensions Installer. Administrators can request activation of this plugin.")
2. [Create a domain](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/2oEx4YLm4N4Ku5C5DtnGXg "You can create a domain by creating a record in the [domain] table.")
3. [Add a domain field to a table](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/f0NesEi2ATmW~9Bu3xuSow "As an administrator, domain-separate a custom table by adding a sys_domain field to it.")

You can also perform these basic administrative tasks on domains:

* [Enable or disable a domain](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/BP8rZdpUQ8Bq~5jtojax0g "When you activate or deactivate a domain, the activation status cascades to companies within the domain.")
* [View domain relationships](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/Thw5YavvAUdgCRHU1MXsSA "The domain map offers domain administrators a read-only representation of the active domains on the instance and how they relate to each other.")
* [Expand domain scope](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/V_0X~C7AkhowWgdu2DhDLw "By default, when a user in the global domain views a table containing a sys_overrides column, the user sees records from only the global domain. When an admin in the global domain views a process table, that admin sees only records that are in that process table.")
* [Create a domain-specific choice list](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/Wj5ROMG1ycATfc1zKTighQ "Administrators can configure choice lists to contain entries specific to a particular domain.")
{#c_DomainSeparationSetup__ul_vpm_15f_l1b}

See [Advanced domain separation administration](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/6Y_4dEKDu7k7sznbUNW4HA "Administrators can view information about domain separation, identify potential issues, and change configuration settings.") for a list of tasks to perform after
you set up domain separation and perform basic administration.
