Group multiple work orders for a work plan into a single work order based on the defined criteria.

Work order grouping consolidates multiple individual work orders into fewer, grouped work orders based on configured criteria such as location, floor, or equipment type. Instead of generating one work order per asset, one work order is
created for a group of assets. Every work order will have corresponding tasks and the list of related tasks of that work order.

For example, consider a plan for maintenance of 100 HVAC systems in a large office building with 10 floors. If grouping is not enabled, one work order is generated for each asset. This generates 100 work orders for the maintenance
plan.

When grouping is enabled, one work order is generated for all the assets that meet the specified condition. For example, you can specify the grouping condition as **Floor** to group all the HVAC units by the floor number. One work
order is generated for all the HVAC units of a floor. So, 10 work orders are generated by grouping the assets.

## Configuration overview {#Group-work-orders__section_xf5_4ql_m3c}

The steps to configure work order grouping for a work plan are:

1. Enable work order grouping for the work plan if you have not already enabled it while creating the plan.
2. [Add grouping criteria](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/pUeK~SfntC6mIX53HF9yyg "Define criteria to group similar work orders for a work plan.")
3. [Configure a work schedule](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/XIPpoYyzVm5Csxb8lALcbQ "After creating a work plan, it’s important to define specific criteria to determine when the plan should be executed. This includes defining the start date and end date for the plan's execution. To create a flexible work schedule for the plan, you can configure multiple work schedules for it and assign them accordingly.")
4. [Associate a work order template to a work schedule](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/toCJ_qUBnA_M7WsokS5uOg "Map a single or multiple work order templates to a planned work schedule. Add conditions to identify the relevant templates for the planned work records.")
5. [Create planned work records](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/6qx3htvoQThPHinHAwXzew "Create a list of planned work records based on the number of configured work schedules, matching records, or the number of templates mapped to the schedule.")
6. [Generate work orders](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/cq3_fJcb3WDzEsKWcW4AxA "Create work orders for the schedule occurrence either manually or by configuring an automated job.")
