Use the Custom Control utility in a Virtual Agent topic or topic block to reference a custom input control or a custom response control. Custom controls complement the controls provided in Assistant Designer.

## Custom control utility properties {#va-custom-control-util__section_mn5_f4w_ksb}

Specify the properties of the custom input control or custom response control that you are
adding to a topic or topic block. For more information about custom controls and their use,

| Custom control | The name of a custom control asset that has been published in Virtual Agent Designer. |
| Node name | The name of the custom control you selected. |
| Input mapping | The variables to be used as input to the selected custom control. For example, the following image has example variables: The contents of this area change according to the custom control you selected. Options may include string input, referenced records, scripts, and so forth. |
| Output mapping | The variables to be output by the selected custom control. For example, the following image has example variables that are enabled: The contents of this area change according to the custom control you selected. |
