## Summary of Building spokes using Spoke Generator

The Spoke Generator app in ServiceNow allows customers to automate integration tasks by creating reusable sequences of actions called spokes.
These spokes enable inbound and outbound integration with third-party applications without requiring scripting, streamlining the development of custom integrations.
The feature requires an Integration Hub subscription and appropriate licenses, particularly for using OpenAPI specifications, Postman collections, or AI-assisted spoke creation.

## App Installation and Dependencies

To use Spoke Generator, customers must install the **Spoke Generator (snspokebuilder)** app from the ServiceNow Store. It depends on the **ServiceNow IntegrationHub Starter Pack Installer (com.glide.hub.integrations.starter)** plugin. Additionally, a ServiceNow IntegrationHub Professional Pack Installer license is required in both production and sub-production environments for certain spoke creation methods.

## Capabilities

* Create custom spokes by importing OpenAPI Specifications or Postman collections, using documentation snippets, or building manually.
* Build reusable, script-free actions to enhance integration workflows.
* Supports inbound and outbound integrations with third-party APIs.

## User Roles and Permissions

* **Admin role:** Full access to view and create spokes, import OpenAPI specs, create connection aliases, publish and save actions, and view spoke activity logs.
* **actiondesigner and fdreadactions roles:** Can view spokes and actions; only actiondesigner can add actions.
* **flowoperator and flowdesigner roles:** Can view flows and subflows.

## OpenAPI Specification Import Limits and Considerations

* Default maximum OpenAPI file size for import is 10 MB; adjustable up to 100 MB via the `glide.rest.openapi.maxrequestsize` system property.
* Supports up to 500 API operations by default, configurable up to 1000 using `glide.rest.openapi.maxoperationlimit`.
* Request body supports only JSON media types.
* OpenAPI step currently does not support certain OpenAPI 3.0 components such as `oneOf`, `anyOf`, `discriminator`, callbacks, security schemes, and others.
* Outputs a string type object when schema includes additionalProperties or no properties.

## Practical Implications for ServiceNow Customers

By leveraging the Spoke Generator, customers can rapidly build and deploy integrations with third-party APIs by importing standardized API definitions or creating actions manually. Understanding the limitations around OpenAPI import size, supported components, and media types helps set realistic expectations and plan integration designs. Correct user roles must be assigned to enable effective collaboration across development and operations teams.

## Current Version

The latest available version of the Spoke Generator app is **v5.0.0**.
Automate integration tasks by creating a sequence of reusable actions to develop custom integrations called spokes.

## Request apps on the Store {#spoke-builder__section_tcg_rrx_zxb}

Visit the [ServiceNow Store](https://store.servicenow.com/sn_appstore_store.do#!/store/home) website to view all the available apps, for information about submitting requests to the store, and to download and install
Spoke Generator (sn_spoke_builder). For cumulative release notes information for all released apps, see the [ServiceNow Store version history release notes](https://www.servicenow.com/docs/r/store-release-notes/sn-store-release-notes.html).

## App dependencies {#spoke-builder__section_ntz_2rx_zxb}

If you're having trouble installing the app, ensure that the dependent plugin, ServiceNow IntegrationHub Starter Pack Installer (com.glide.hub.integrations.starter) is installed. You need ServiceNow IntegrationHub Professional Pack
Installer license in your prod and sub-prod environments for creating spokes using OpenAPI specification, Postman
collection, or
with
AI.
Note:
Some of these plugins are licensable features and require appropriate licenses, if used outside the spoke implementation.

## Capabilities {#spoke-builder__section_gdk_qmx_zxb}

An Integration Hub custom spoke provides both inbound and outbound integration with third-party applications. These integrations, referred to as spokes, are easy to configure and enable you to quickly add
powerful actions without the need to write a script. This feature requires an Integration Hub subscription. For more information, see [Legal schedules - IntegrationHub overview](https://www.servicenow.com/content/dam/servicenow-assets/public/en-us/doc-type/legal/snc-addendum-integrationhub.pdf).

You can build custom spokes for the required third-party application by importing an [OpenAPI Specification](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/YeT8ViZ88siNlNLsOHqL9g "Automate an integration and generate reusable actions by importing an OpenAPI Specification.") or [Postman collection](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/sGion9PWdO2zG6N~vzjNbg "Automate an integration and generate reusable actions by importing a Postman collection."), [documentation snippets from third-party API documentation](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/iBD0q8ob9tDlxYzF4Y8VlQ "Use ServiceNow Otto in Spoke Generator to create spokes and actions by providing the required third-party API documentation snippet as an input."), or [creating a spoke manually](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/wUViyyjTM8IL362MfNI62w "Automate an integration and generate reusable actions manually.").

## Required user roles {#spoke-builder__section_np1_3ky_byb}

* Users with the admin role can:
  * View the Spokes tab.
  * Create a new spoke.
  * Import an OpenAPI Specification.
  * Create connection alias.
  * Publish actions and save actions as drafts.
  * See spoke activity log.
  {#spoke-builder__ul_qzw_bly_byb}
* Users with the action_designer and fd_read_actions roles can:
  * View the Spokes tab.
  * See actions in a spoke.
  {#spoke-builder__ul_z2v_tly_byb}
* Users with the action_designer role can add actions.
  Note:
  Users with just the fd_read_actions role can only see actions.
* Users with the flow_operator or flow_designer can view flows and subflows.
{#spoke-builder__ul_btf_1ly_byb}

## OpenAPI Specification size limit {#spoke-builder__section_ssb_lmy_byb}

By default, the system can import OpenAPI Specifications up to 10 MB. To increase the import size, update the glide.rest.openapi.max_request_size system property. The maximum value is 100 MB.

## Limitations of OpenAPI Specification {#spoke-builder__section_igf_l1g_dhb}

Spoke actions created by importing OpenAPI specification, contain the OpenAPI step. Ensure that you are aware of these OpenAPI step limitations.

Request body media types
: The request body only supports JSON media types.
    Note:
    A string type output object is created when the OpenAPI schema has additionalProperties or no properties.

OpenAPI 3.0 components

: OpenAPI 3.0 adds new components to Swagger 2.0 to describe an API in further detail. OpenAPI support in the OpenAPI step supports some, but not all of these components. The OpenAPI step does not currently support these
    components.

    * Schema Object: oneOf, anyOf, additionalProperties properties
    * Discriminator Object
    * Info object: termsOfService, contact, license fields
    * Example Object
    * Link Object
    * Callback Object
    * Security Scheme Object
    * Security Requirements Object
    * Tag Object
    * External Documentation Object
    * Server Object
    * Specification extensions
    * Recursive references
    {#spoke-builder__ul_gtc_xbp_zhb}

    More information on these components is available in the OpenAPI documentation. See [OpenAPI Specification](https://swagger.io/specification/).

Maximum number of operations supported
: The number of API operations is limited to 500 by default. However, using the system property glide.rest.openapi.max_operation_limit, you can configure the number of operations from 1 through 1000.
