# Adding or updating app files

# Creating or updating an app file with Build Agent {#ariaid-title1}

Release version: Australia
Updated August 19, 2026

Use Build Agent to add new files or modify existing files in ServiceNow applications to support ongoing app development and maintenance.

The process for creating or updating an app file is very similar to creating an application. The main difference is that Build Agent prompts you to enter the application name or scope so it knows which application to update files in.

In a new chat with Build Agent, select Create a file or Update a file to get started, and continue the conversation from there.
Figure 1. Add or update a file

Continue the conversation just like you did with creating an application, using the change log and checkpoints as you go. For more information, see [Build Agent checkpoints and conversation change log](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/Ak18rxgvMtqWbJtFUc6~aQ "The conversation change log tracks every change Build Agent makes to your application. It appears automatically in an integrated tab in ServiceNow Studio and lets you view updates, roll back to a previous checkpoint, and deploy changes to an update set.") and [Revert app changes with Build Agent](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/RFYaMzjkypR316d_WlakkQ "Restore your development to a previous state when you want to undo recent changes. Use checkpoints created during Build Agent conversations to revert both code and chat history.").

Review the application and its metadata in ServiceNow Studio using the change log. For more information, see [Build Agent checkpoints and conversation change log](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/Ak18rxgvMtqWbJtFUc6~aQ "The conversation change log tracks every change Build Agent makes to your application. It appears automatically in an integrated tab in ServiceNow Studio and lets you view updates, roll back to a previous checkpoint, and deploy changes to an update set."). You can also review the application using the File Navigator in ServiceNow Studio. For more information, see [Find an app or app file using the Navigator panel](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/LRGAgKkWPjf2ZetEW37oqw "Use the Navigator panel in ServiceNow Studio to browse apps and app files by metadata type and open them directly.").

For information on deploying your application, see [Deploying what you built with Build Agent](https://servicenow-prod.fluidtopics.net/UfO9v7wOOeW1T_UazSmw1A "Learn about deployment methods and workflows for moving applications created with Build Agent from development to production environments. Choose the right deployment approach based on your application complexity and organizational requirements.").
